Increasingly we are aware that Health Care Professionals are vulnerable to stress burnout and empathy-compassion fatigue due to an emotionally demanding environment. Self-compassion for Health Professionals is a short live webinar that aims to teach powerful practices to promote resilience, to reduce stress and burnout in the workplace.
Health Professionals focus on others who need help to deal with mental or physical illness. They work in challenging circumstances, work long hours and are often under-resourced. Health professionals do not necessarily have the time or ability to process the difficult emotions that arise in response to caring for people who are suffering, who may be traumatised or in pain, and where, in addition, there may be a need to navigate complex organisations. Developing self-compassion means that we protect and support ourselves: we acquire an attitude of goodwill, so we can skillfully attend to our self, when times are tough, to function and carry on in a competent, effective manner while remaining compassionate.
The new Self-Compassion for Health Professionals (10 hours - 6 weeks) is an adaptation of Mindful Self-Compassion and Compassion Mind Training (Compassion-Focused Therapy), designed for busy people, who may have time constraints, and yet wants to learn ways to build their emotional resources. Self-Compassion teaches core self-care practices, to respond to difficult moments with kindness, understanding as well as resilience. The practices included in this program are simple, quick and easy, that you can use anywhere, anytime, when you need them. In this new program, we will be teaching the basics of Mindful Self-Compassion designed by Kristin Neff/Chris Germer as well as the essence of Compassion Mind Training developed by Paul Gilbert to strengthen engagement in the workplace, with some additional tools to promote mindfulness.
This course is suitable for health professionals who wish to begin to use self-compassion in their work as well as others who have previously attended mindfulness or self-compassion programs who want to refresh or deepen their practice as well as to learn additional quick simple tools to use in the moment to ease stress and promote resilience. We believe that a blend of beginners and others who are more experienced in the practice of mindfulness and self-compassion can be supportive for everyone on their journey of self-compassion.
In this brilliant new program, you will be presented with evidence-based strategies to manage stress, anxiety, burnout as well as powerful micro self-care practices, to refresh and revitalise your professional work. Mindfulness and Self-Compassion for health worker program is empirically validated (Krista Gregory, 2019). Numerous research shows that a short course program in mindfulness and self-compassion can lead to a reduction in stress, depression, secondary traumatic stress and burnout, as well as an increase in compassion, mindfulness, and job satisfaction in healthcare workers.
Targeting Health and Helping Professionals
This Self-Compassion training program is targeted at professionals who focus on providing a service to others and would like to feel more calm, vibrant and compassionate from the inside out. As professionals, we know the power of compassion. We use it every day when we care for others. It contains what we all yearn for… feelings of acceptance, comfort, kindness and love. But what would happen if we turn this power onto ourselves?
Self-compassion (MSC) is a brave new way to care for ourselves that is uplifting and empowering. The training program consists of easy, simple ways to soothe to feel calmer during stressful moments while increasing the ability to resolve challenges and to enjoy life. Once we can learn those skills for ourselves, we can teach them effectively to others. Everyone will benefit!
Self-compassion transforms lives. Self-compassion is redefined as the ability to care and to comfort ourselves but also to strengthen when it is needed. It is revolutionizing self-care and emotional coping skills in psychology. Self-Compassion is a new skill-building program to cultivate our inner strengths; to courageously attend to difficulties with understanding and kindness, to empower the self.
Compassion is defined as a sensitivity to suffering in self and others (empathy), with a commitment to try to alleviate and prevent suffering in self and others (Paul Gilbert). There are three flows of compassion: offering compassion to others, and to ourselves (self-compassion) and receiving compassion from others.
Compassion is often understood as yin that is “being with”, soft, comforting, validating and soothing. Kristin Neff and Chris Germer, have pointed out that compassion can also be strong and fierce with a yang quality, which is about “acting in the world” intending to protect, provide, and motivate. The Self-Compassion program contains a wide range of quick, short and simple practices and exercises with both yin and yang aspects, helping you to explore what you need, to build your inner emotional resources, to promote increased engagement in the workplace.
After participating in this workshop, you will be more able to:

Session 2: Practising Self-Compassion and Mindfulness with Four Informal Practices
Session 3: Discovering Your Compassionate Voice/Self and Motivating Yourself with Compassion
Session 4: Self-Compassion and Resilience with Three Strategies for Meeting Difficult Emotions

Who is it for
The program is targeting health professionals (psychologists, social workers, nurses, medical practitioners, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, counsellors. ). However, other helping professionals would also find it very helpful, who are working in the educational, legal, welfare, emergency, wellness, business, defence or environmental sectors such as school teachers, lawyers, mindfulness/yoga teachers, coaches, managers, students and so on.
This course is suitable for those who wish to begin to use self-compassion in their work as well as others who have previously attended a mindfulness or self-compassion program. It is an opportunity to refresh personal practices while also learning additional quick simple mindfulness tools to use on the spot, to ease stress and promote resilience. We believe that a blend of beginners and previous MSC attendees can be supportive for everyone on their journey of self-compassion.
We have seen how much self-compassion helps professionals in every field, by improving their relationships with themselves as well as with others in the workplace such as clients, patients, consumers, students and colleagues. In addition, self-compassion alleviate empathetic distress, fatigue and burnout, while increasing resilience, satisfaction and wellbeing.
What to Expect
Each Zoom session will be live and interactive however, the content of each session will also be pre-recorded so that you can review each session at a time that is convenient to you.
In this live interactive online webinar training course, we will be teaching the essential self-care practices of Mindful Self-Compassion. During the training program, you will be introduced to 14 powerful quick and simple strategies to soothe, to calm as well as short exercises to promote emotional strength, resilience, flexibility, acceptance and positive motivation that you can use on the go, in your daily life at work and home.
The emphasis of this Self-Compassion program is on psychological self-care. You will be presented with tools that you can use in the workplace, not only self-care strategies to assist you at home. We become stronger as we develop an inner capacity to be with our difficulties and with ourselves, in a compassionate way, enabling us to deal more effectively with challenges. During the Self-Compassion classes, the goal is for participants to directly experience and learn short self-care practices that evoke mindfulness, self-compassion and resilience, that they can integrate into the workplace.
The exercises and tools presented will consist of short mindfulness and self-compassion practices that you can use on the spot, to integrate in your daily life. Daily meditation practices are not required and are optional but encouraged.
This short course in self-compassion does not have all the mindful self-compassion exercises that are included in the 8 weeks program. This short course only has short practices that can be used on the go at work to ease stress and burnout. The 8 week MSC program includes practices and approaches to assist in working with complex issues or long-standing patterns.
After each session, you will receive an email summarising the topics, exercises and home practices as well as provided a google link so that you can access a pre-recording of each session to listen to at your own convenience.
What “Self-Compassion for Professionals” program is not:
This Self-Compassion course is an educational group program to build emotional resources and is not a substitute for individual medical or psychological treatments. This program is not group therapy.
Self-Compassion for Professionals is an adventure in self-discovery and personal growth. We come together as a group, Online, to provide a safe, supportive and confidential environment to develop compassion for ourselves and others.
You can share your experience as much or as little as you like. Participants who share their experiences on the path of building compassion, usually, find that it is very helpful.
We will ask you not to record the sessions to respect the confidentiality and privacy of the other participants.
